Still, it isn't an overly serious film so it is pretty enjoyable to watch, particularly when you have such great actors as Toshiro Mifune, Hideko Takamine and Chishu Ryu; not to mention the fine color cinematography in 'scope widescreen (there is a scene near the end which even gets kind of psychedelic!).

1958 feels like a breezing through of a story that could've been a lot more interesting.anyway the acting is pretty good despite it, so i'm tacking on an extra 1/2 star to my rating for that.
