Certification of Compliance

DO YOU HAVE A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLIANCE FOR YOUR ELECTRIC FENCE?
Did you know that, just as you are required to produce a Certificate of Compliance for electricity and gas, your electric fence needs to be certified? This is for insurance purposes, as stipulated by the Electrical Machinery Regulations in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This Act states that certification is required for fences where the following conditions are in place:

    • · The fence was installed after 1 October 2012
    • · The fence was altered or added to after 1 October 2012
    • · The property where the fence has been installed has been sold, or changed ownership, since 1 October 2012.
This means that, if you live on a property where the electric fence was installed prior to 1 October 2012, you do not need to obtain a certificate – if you have not made any changes to the original fence that is. It is only if you have recently taken ownership of such a property that you are required to do so. The law does not state whether the onus is on the buyer or the seller to obtain certification; this is a matter for both parties to discuss and agree upon. Remember that, even if you have already had your electric fence certified, you will need new certification if you make any further additions or amendments.
