As high school ends, they come together as a couple, but within a year, with both of them playing ball at USC, Quincy's relationship with his father takes an ugly turn, and it leads to a break up with Monica. Their mothers intervene and soon Quincy and Monica have made up. Through soul searching, Monica learns to control her emotions and leads her team to the state championship game. When my daughter saw it a few years later, it became her favourite film. I have seen other basketball movies ("Above The Rim" and "He Got Game" comes to mind), but this is one of the better ones, esp. Written by Quincy is shocked that a girl could love basketball as much as he does, and can play so well.

Prior to playing Monica, Sanaa Lathan had never played basketball. I'm not sure I quite believe the final shot, though. I rented this movie and you can rent it for 14 days. Immediately, Quincy bricks a three point shot, but makes up for it on the very next play with a showtime steal-dunk. Monica hears about Quincy's injury, and flies home to see him. From young children to grown ups, we find these two struggling to deal with and master both Love AND Basketball as they go through life. Two brothers, survivors of family tragedy, take different life paths: one falls for a high-spirited waitress and dreams of success, the other follows a life of petty crime.
They're 11, and both want to play in the NBA, just like Quincy's dad. She enjoyed how the film portrayed women's sports in general and says "The speed and wiliness of the game itself ensure that movies about men who shoot hoops are exciting, but the novelty of watching women bring their own physical grace to the contest is a turn-on. In South Central L.A., a misguided 20-year-old African-American man, a "baby boy", faces the commitments of real life.
While Quincy finds instant success on the court, Monica struggles for playing time, behind senior guard Sidra O'Neal. The second quarter of the story begins in 1988, when both Monica and Quincy are the respective leaders of their high school teams. Love & Basketball is a 2000 American romantic sports drama film written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (in her directorial debut). The subplot about the troubled marriage of Quincy's parents was also well done.
